AI in Public Relations: Innovation or the Biggest Threat to Trust?
Introduction: The Growing Role of AI in PR
Artificial intelligence is changing the public relations profession. The podcasts titled “How To Successfully Use The Spectacular AI ‘ChatGPT’ In Public Relations“, “ChatGPT Self-Describes Its Benefits to Public Relations!!“, and “ChatGPT: Great, Successful Uses For PR Teams” illustrate how AI may help professionals produce content quickly, track media coverage, analyze consumer trends, and generate campaign concepts. AI technology has made the process of PR more efficient, giving professionals more time to develop strategies and think creatively. Despite its many advantages, however, artificial intelligence poses serious risks to the future of the public relations field. The greatest risk does not stem from job loss but rather from the erosion of trust, authenticity, and ethical communication.

The Threat of Misinformation and Loss of Credibility
The biggest fear regarding the use of AI in public relations is the dissemination of misinformation. With the use of artificial intelligence, it is easy for one to generate news items, tweets, and press releases within no time. The only problem is that such speed also increases the chances of disseminating information that is not true. As per PRSA, ethics in communication call for honesty and accountability in every message.
PR Daily’s latest study has shown that there may be instances wherein AI technology may spread biased and inaccurate information when not regulated by humans (Staley, 2025). This presents a challenge for PR practitioners, as public relations practice is based on trust and credibility. If the audience becomes skeptical about the accuracy of the information presented, organizations might have trouble building a good reputation.
Deepfakes and other forms of synthetic media pose another challenge to crisis communications. Using AI technology, one can impersonate someone’s voice, conduct phony interviews, and create fictional accounts about events in mere minutes. In the modern digital age, PR professionals have to react swiftly to preserve the credibility of the brand.
Human Relationships Still Matter
While AI may be able to perform numerous tasks, it will never be able to take the place of the human element in public relations. According to PR Week, building relationships, being emotionally intelligent, and crisis judgment are areas where human skill cannot be replicated by artificial intelligence (Hackney, 2025).
The podcasts pointed out that the role of AI is best suited as an aid rather than a substitute for communicators. In “ChatGPT Self-Describes Its Benefits to Public Relations!!“, AI talks about its capability to provide instant suggestions, help in writing, and facilitate research. Even here, there is no doubt that professionals are needed to make decisions related to the message and ensure that all aspects are considered by the communicator. For instance, although the AI can aid in drafting a press release, the professionals will be responsible for editing and making it appropriate for the target public.
Moreover, there is an apprehension regarding the possible loss of chances for developing writing and strategic abilities by young PR specialists due to the takeover of AI in performing lower-level jobs. As per Axios, although the use of AI by PR professionals has seen significant growth since 2023, training and ethics have not been properly handled yet (“PR Professionals Have Tripled AI Use Since 2023”).
Why Ethical AI Use Will Define the Future of PR
The way forward for public relations will hinge on the manner in which AI is applied. AI can definitely help boost productivity, conduct research, and plan communications, but it has to be used in an ethical manner by human beings. Public relations practitioners need to verify facts and inform their audience that AI was used extensively in their communications.
Instead of supplanting communicators, artificial intelligence should enhance their capabilities in forming trusting relations and sound communication plans. The field of public relations has always been all about trust, which will be ever more essential with further development in the use of AI.
🎧 Although the podcast conversations emphasized how the emergence of AI was revolutionizing the practice of PR, it was also clear that human intuition and authenticity are at the core of good communication.
